PHOTOSHOP EXERCISE:
1. Open a new Photoshop file, 7”x7”, RGB, Background:
white, 8-bits, Resolution 150. This is your background file. Save your file
as: YLNIbubbles. Be sure to save in your DOCUMENTS folder.
2. Find an animal photo at the bottom of the page that you
would like to use! Drag it to the desktop and use the FILE: OPEN command to
open it into Photoshop. (Imagine what the animal/animals are saying!)
3. Use the Move Tool to drag your animal into your background
file. SCALE the photo so that it is as wide as the background file. (Edit:
Transform: Scale...be sure to hold the shift key and ONLY scale from the corners!)
There may be leftover space. This is OK! Do not stretch your photo out of
shape.
4.Next, imagine what your animal or animals are saying, or
thinking!
5.Go to the Custom Shape Tool, and choose a Talk Bubble shape
(shown right). If you've forgotten how to use Shapes, review the exercise
you did last nine weeks! (Here's a link to that exercise: Shapes
Exercise).
6. Choose a color in the menu bar for your bubble. Create
a talk bubble and position it where it won't interfere with the photo. You
can scale it, or flip it by going to Edit: Transform: Scale (or flip).
7. Next, rasterize your bubble by going
to LAYER:RASTERIZE: SHAPE. (This converts it to a bitmap image).
8. Select the bubble with the MAGIC WAND and use the STROKE command (in Edit) to put a thick line around the edge of the bubble. (See my example at the top of the page). Be sure it a color that contrasts with the fill color!
9. Next, put a Drop Shadow on the bubble (LAYER: LAYER STYLE: DROP SHADOW.)
10. Now it's time to add your text! (Try a font called "Comic Sans"...or any font that you like!) Be sure that your text fits in the bubble without touching the outside edge of the bubble. If you have more than one animal, you may want more than one talk bubble!
HINT: Your bubble should NOT OVERLAP anything important! Place it so that it fits inside the photo in a place that won't be awkward! It also must fit inside the photo without touching the edges of the photo! The first ten people in each class to email me will get ten extra points. Send an email with your name in the subject line to my alternate email address. The alternate email address is graphics2us@yahoo.com. When you complete your talk bubble exercise, be sure to put it in your PowerPoint Portfolio!

For those who want more:
Try making your own custom made talk bubble by drawing it with the lasso or polygonal lasso. Stroke it and fill it with color!
