OBJECTIVE:
Students will use their quad designs to create four digital paintings with
specific color themes.
In Part II of the Quad project, you will:
COLOR
SCHEMES & FILE NAMES:
YLNI quadm - This is your master quad.
IT WILL NEVER BE COLORED. Once you have created and cleaned
up this quad, you will SAVE IT four more times using the file names
below!
YLNI quad 1 YOUR CHOICE of colors (must
conform to requirements!)
YLNI quad 2: Monochromatic color theme
YLNI quad 3: Complementary color theme
YLNI quad 4: “Theme” colors
or TEAM colors (pick a set of 3 to 4 colors)
FILE NAMES: Each file should be named properly, with your last name and initials, and the project name: Example: “jonesBJ quad1"
READ BELOW for specific steps!
STEP ONE:
Open a new AppleWorks Painting File. Set the resolution to 144
DPI, using the FORMAT menu. (Be sure your file is not in
landscape mode!)
STEP TWO: Go to the FILE menu and find the INSERT command.
Navigate to the folder with your scanned quad design. (You may need to
put file type on "all available" to see your file.) Insert.
STEP THREE: When your design appears, do not click on
anything! Go immediately to the TRANSFORM menu, and highlight SCALE BY
PERCENT. Scale to fit .(Hint: try 77 percent).
STEP FOUR: Zoom down to 66%. Place your cursor in the
middle of your design and drag it down to the center of the white field.
When you have it where you want it, deselect by clicking outside the select
lines (the marching ants).
STEP FIVE: Draw a thick black border around the design.
Be sure the border touches the design on all four sides.
STEP SIX: Zoom up to 400%. Trap your colors by looking
carefully at all the lines, looking for any pinholes. Use the pencil tool
(black) to fill any in spaces that may leak.
STEP SEVEN: When you are sure your design is cleaned
up, save as “YLNIquadm". THIS FILE WILL REMAIN
UNCOLORED. You must now go to SAVE AS, and save 4 more times, once for
each Quad theme. Put the proper number on each one (i.e., “YLNIquad1,
2, 3 & 4”). Close all files.
STEP EIGHT: Reopen Quad 1. Use the drop bucket to fill
each space with a color, pattern or gradient (NO TEXTURES with pictures...i.e.,
ducks, etc.). Be sure to CREATE patterns and gradients yourself. Use your
color theory handout if you are uncertain about what colors belong where.
Remember that no two colors, patterns or gradients can be next to a space
with that same color.
EVALUATION:
CHECK THE GRADING RUBRIC FOR MORE DETAILED REQUIREMENTS!:
Meeting the requirements, careful attention to detail, craftsmanship and
EFFORT in creating an interesting and visually appealing design! Students
should strive for originality and creativity in choosing and placing colors.
Remember, it's not about "quick", it's about quality!
Basic Requirements:
1. Each Quad design must be in keeping with the correct color scheme or theme.
2. Each Quad design should show evidence that the student used many different
colors, created original gradients, created textures (wallpapers) and
patterns. (Note: limit the number of patterns you use! The white areas must
be colorized, too. Try creating your patterns in the wallpaper creator for
easier application!)
3. All colors, gradients, patterns and textures MUST be symmetrical, and employ
mirror symmetry. (i.e., if one part of your design is red, it must be the
same in ALL four sections).
4. Within each quad, no two colors, patterns, gradients or textures (wallpapers)
can be placed next to one another.
5. Alternate for best effect: Dark colors against light, bright colors against
dull, patterned colors against flat color, etc.
6. Remember not to use the goofy textures (wallpapers), and to only use ONE of the premade gradients.
7. Avoid using black! Use dark blue, purple, etc. If you use black you may have problems if you should need to remove a color from a space....it tends to take the lines, too!
