Examples
Check out
the examples below and read the suggestions below each, for using your
new journal element: sewing & weaving!
These are journals from past years. They did not necessarily have the
same exact requirements as the journal
you have been assigned...so please look at them as inspiration and motivation!

What's so good
about this one???? Well, it has great, rich color...the space is completely
used (no white space showing), it has a clear center of attention, it
makes good use of text,
(both printed and hand written), it has several LAYERS of information,
and it has "WOW" factor! (and not too much collage!)
WHERE would I use weaving or sewing
here? EZ! I would sew little black "X's"
on all the "lie" words! Look carefully and you'll see what I
mean!

What's so
great abou tthis one?
The use of collage letters makes it JUMP off the page!! Plus the colors
are vibrant, there's plenty of hand coloring, there's pattern and
design in it, it has overlapping LAYERS of information--and it has a great
overall look! (and not too much collage!)
Where would I use sewing or weaving
in this one? I would use some big blue yarn, and "sew"
the zig zag line that is around the quote at the bottom. If you don't
have a big enough needle, simply poke the holes, enlarge them slightly,
and push the yarn thru, pulling it as you go! |
|

What's so
great about it?
It has justs the right amount of collage (the photo), it has a lot of
hand drawn jazzy patterns, it's full of vibrant color and it's nicely
organized.
Where would I use sewing or weaving
on this one? I would probably use a whole punch to punch holes
around the edges, and
then use thin strips of paper, ribbon or yard to create a woven border...similar
to the red wavy lines that you see above. (Red, white and blue, of course!) |

What's so
great about it?
Well, besides being on of my personal favorite quotes, it uses lots of
hand drawn text, it's full of patterns (which gives it a look of motion!)
and it's full of color.
(Note that it is not just
"scribble"...but controlled and creative mark making!)
Where would I use sewing or weaving? I would stitch around the
photo of Dr. King, using long exposed pieces of thread--that would look
like a "starburst" sort of thing
and repeat some of the jazzy designs see all over the page. |
|

What's so great about it?
It's a pretty clever combination of photo and drawing--plus there's an interesting
corner
of collage and vibrant color all over the page! Additionally there are overlapping
layers of information!
Where would I put my stitchery in this one?
I would use red thread or yarn, to "sew" Dr. King's tie. OR I
might use white thread and
fill in one of the stars. |
