JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT:

Due: Thursday, May 21, 2009
CRITIQUE DATE: Tuesday, May 26, 2009
In this journal assignment, you will choose a word or phrase, and draw and design it so that it looks like it's meaning. Check out the examples to get the idea!

First, just for fun, check out Bimbo's Zoo! Turn on your sound! Also check out "Type Is Art".

For this journal, you will need a BLACK marker...Draw your word or phrase first with pencil; complete it with the black marker so that it is big and bold, filling most of the space on your page. Be sure to use a ruler, and craft your letters carefully. Craftsmanship counts!

After you have fashioned the word or phrase, complete the background with bright colors and patterns, or a background scene appropriate to your word. Fill all spaces with color. (Note: The examples do not show this...they are intended to be examples of the word, only.)The brighter and bolder, the better! (Go back and review the journal assignment we did on patterns during the first nine weeks for help!)

Last, create a border of collage, created entirely of letters and words that relate to your word/phrase and your overall design. Again, craftsmanship and planning count! (Hint: Your collage border should add to the overal look of the page...not just be "stuck" on.)

Somewhere in your page, find a place for a bit of collage. The collage should be an added touch or highlight, not the center of attention! (Less than 10% would work!)

The completed page should be a visual party on paper!

Evaluation will be based upon following directions, state of completion, level of complexity, craftsmanship, skills developed over the course of the year makings journal entries, following directions, and the "clever" content! Make it expressive, fun, witty, neat, and give it pizzaz!

HINT: If in doubt about your solution to this problem, do a rough sketch and bring it by to show me!

WORDS TO THE WISE: It's OK to use the internet to find a word or phrase...But DO NOT COPY the design off the internet. I've seen them all, and the result will be zero!

"Slice of Life"...Not too complex, but very, very cool!

That's the way the cookie crumbles!

Note that it LOOKS like a "cycle"!
