VARIATIONS ON A THEME:
Using a tiling technique to create unity, variety and pattern.

Due Date: Monday, Nov. 7, 2011
Critique Date: THURSDAY, NOV. 10, 2011
The last day to receive credit for this journal is Friday, Nov. 10th.

Size: One page

PROCEDURE & REQUIREMENTS:

1. FIRST, check out the student examples online. Next, choose a simple object that you can explore visually! (Don't choose an apple, or a cartoon. It must be a real object, not an imaginary thing. Try an everyday household object!) Remember that a shape is not an object! (An example would be a circle: this is not an object, it is a shape!)

2. Divide your page into 6 equal parts. Be creative! Be artistic! Be innovative!

3. Now, find 6 DIFFERENT ways to draw your object! The idea is to take one object and redesign it, in several different ways. Look at the examples of all the different ways an apple can be designed! Some are simple, some are complex. Some are "realistic" and some are "stylized". Some have patterns and designs, that tell us something about the object...or relate to the object somehow. Some are simply whimsical and fun!

3. After you have drawn, inked and colorized your 6 objects, use rich, deep color to fully color the objects AND design the background of each tile. Use interesting colors and patterns. You may use whatever materials you wish for the background. Be sure your background CONTRASTS with the object...so that it makes it stand out! CREATIVE BACKGROUNDS COUNT!

4. Label each object you've created. Be creative!

5. Use collage in a creative way! Don't use images or photos of "things"....just use colorful bits of paper to enhance your work!

6. Create a pop up, window or slider somewhere in your work that is an interesting shape...not a square or rectangle. For full credit, make sure that no tape shows, and that it is well constructed, and not "stuck" on. It should work in with the overall composition of the page. (Windows on the edge of the paper get no credit!)

7. FILL THE PAGE and be creative! Show what you've learned!

8. Use FULL RICH COLOR! Not light, sketchy colors.

9. BE ORIGINAL! Use ideas that are new and different!

WHAT not TO DO:

1. Do not use cartoons or copyrighted images.

2. Don't copy directly off the internet. Be creative!

3. Avoid choosing a subject that is hard, or complex to draw.

4. Avoid simply drawing one thing--and coloring it differently. You must DESIGN it differently!
