Artists have been creating self portraits since the beginning of time in order to answer the question, "Who am I"?
Your assignment is to create a one page self-portrait....without showing your face!
Who are you, really? What makes you special? What is important in your life? What qualities make you shine?
Your self portrait should reveal something special about you, but in a DIFFERENT WAY...Perhaps you should consider some unusual angle or direction (aerial view? worm's view?)...or perhaps you should focus on some part of yourself that reveals some special talent or skill! (examples: your feet! your hands!) Consider who you are and make a list of qualities that make you "you". Then, plan a page in your journal that is a self-portrait (without showing your face!).
Requirements:
1. DRAWING:
You journal page must be primarily drawing, and should NOT contain photos
of you!
(If you are not comfortable drawing from life, remember that one way to get
started is to trace from a photo. (DO NOT trace from a cartoon, drawing or
any copyrighted artwork). Also, most artists use a mirror to draw themselves!
2. PLANNING! Thoughful, careful consideration about how you want to present yourself. Evidence of time, thought and planning and well crafted execution!
3. Meaningful text! Write about you, who you are, what characteristics make you unique!
4. Use
BOLD, BRIGHT COLORS! Remember to use repeated patterns, shapes,
etc., to create interest! .Full color, total involvement of the page
(no white space for full credit!)
4. Collage: 25% or less. Do not use entire photos, pictures or images of anything, anywhere on your journal page! Think back to Bearden and how to correctly use collage. Use collage ONLY to enhance color and texture or to create an entirely new multi-faceted you! Photos of objects, backgrounds, etc, will NOT BE COUNTED and will deduct from the overall grade. Find interesting, rich and colorful bits of paper and cut them into shapes that can be used to enrich the surface of the page.
5. Include a door or window!

TRADITIONAL
SELF PORTRAITS
Read and look at the different styles artists have used to create self portraits!
Most of these below are what are considered "traditional" self-portraits...meaning
they are "head shots". Yours should be something very different
from "traditional"!
