Journal: PHOTOCOLLAGE
Due
Date: Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010
CRITIQUE DATE: Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010
"A
dream collage is pictures of your goals. It is like your future photo album."
Bo Bennett
MATERIALS:
REQUIRMENTS:
Directions: Before you start, read all the directions from beginning to end! (Also, see examples at bottom of this page!)
Step 1:
Explore Collage Machine (link right).
Start by clicking the "Auto" button to see some collages and get
ideas. Then, experiment! Using Collage Machine, you can place objects, resize
them, adjust transparencies, etc. (There is also a link at the bottom of the
page to go to Collage Machine I).
Step 2. To begin your journal: First, pick a poem or a song that you like and that has good visual imagery.
Step 3: Next, find a photograph that works with your song/poem. Your photo should not be any smaller than 4x5 inches or larger than 5x7 inches. You may use a photo you took yourself, or a photo from a magazine. You may also use a photo printed from the internet, SO LONG as it is in focus and full color.
Step 4: Cut your
photo into 7 pieces. Think about your poem or song and what shapes it might
suggest. DO NOT cut around figures, or other things in the photo. Be brave,
and cut into objects and people, in order to cut interesting shapes! BE SURE
THAT YOU KEEP AND USE all of your photo. There should not be any remaining.
pieces.
Step 5: Arrange the 7 pieces of the photograph
in a way that is visually completely different. (Don't simply glue them down
with space between them, as they had been prior to cutting into pieces. Rearrange
the pieces into a new image! Allow some of the pieces to overlap. Rearrange,
so that they create an interesting design. LOOK at the pieces. LOOK at the
negative space (between the pieces) and try to find a pleasing arrangement.
Step
6: In
the negative space (between the photos) use color and design to fully colorize
the page with rich, full color. No white should remain. You may use colored
pencils, markers, paint, etc. (No colored paper).
Step 7: Next, add your meaningful text (song or poem) with ink. Do not use pencil! Use your sharpie or another pen. Remember that the text can overlap, outline, and fill areas in order to create visual interest.
Step
8:
Complete your design by adding a door or window!
If you need assistance, please see me PRIOR to the critique date!

Note: These journals may not have exactly the same requirements as
you do, but they are good examples of photo collage!
Please be sure and read the directions above carefully.
Look at these student examples as food for thought, not necessarily "A"
work.
