Extra Credit Journal! 150 points! This journal has a lot of steps. Follow carefully and use careful measuring! Remember that craftsmanship counts! Also remember that journal assignments NOT in the journal will not receive credit. This includes any pages "added in", glued in, stapled in, etc. NO CREDIT for less than A/B work!
MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:
1
sheet of construction paper
8.5 X 11" or 9x12"
(depending upon the size or your journal) (You could also carefully
cut one sheet out of the back of your journal for this purpose. I have about
30 pieces of construction paper I will give away to the first students who
ask!)
Ruler
Scissors
Glue or Paste (NO staples or tape!)
2 photos: 5 "x 8" (actual photo, or from a magazine,
or print from internet. The richer in color, the better! Look for interesting
photos! Don't choose two that are alike...we want them to be veeery different!)
PROCEDURE:
Step One: Take your construction paper and turn it so that the long side is on top. Next, use your ruler to begin measuring off one inch segments. Measure along the top. placing a small "dot" at each inch. Next, mark off the bottom. After you have dots along the top and the bottom of the paper, use the ruler to connect the dots. You should have a sheet of paper that is NEATLY and ACCURATELY measured into 11 one-inch segments.
Step Two: Mark off every other section as "A" or "B" as shown.
Step Three: Next, fold along the lines neatly, using a concertina fold, as shown at right. Crispness counts! Be sure you fold only along the lines, as shown.
Step Four: Prepare your photos. For this part of the task, you will need two photos. Cut a 5 x 8" rectange from each photo. (The easiest way to do this is to cut a 5x8" rectangle out of plain paper and then lay it down on the photo. Trace around it. Cut away the area outside the rectangle.) Measure accurately, or it will not come together in the final steps. Do this for both photos.
Step Five: Next, measure off one inch sections on both photos, just as you did on your heavy paper. Use scissors or a mat knive to NEATLY cut both photos into strips that are 1" wide and 8" high.
Step Six: Next, go to your folded concertina (marked A & B): Start to glue down one of the photos on the "A" side of the folded paper. Glue the first piece on the first, left hand "A" strip. Then, skip a space (the B space) and go to the next "A" space. Continue until all 5 pieces are glued down. Repeat the process with the second photo on the opposite side of the fold.
Step Seven: Glue the extra (unmarked) end strip down to your journal. Glue it as near the spine as possible. Do not glue down the remaining page. Fold neatly inside the book. To display, open the book, and set it up "concertina" style.
Step Eight: Fill any remaining space on your concertina with rich text, color, patterns and designs. Be creative! Be inventive!
