The Collage Sampler
READ all of the directions before you begin!
DUE DATE: Thurs., December 3, 2009
CRITIQUE DATE: MONDAY, DEC. 7, 2009

This quarter, we will be doing 5 collage journals. The next two assignments will get you prepared, and begin to heighten your sensitivity to a wide variety of colors, values and textures.

OBJECTIVE: 1) To find color swatches of each of the primary and secondary colors (red, yellow, blue, orange, violet and green) and,
2) to create a color "sampler" by glueing them into organized areas, as shown.

SOURCES: Magazines, newspapers, mail (we all get junk mail!), wrapping paper, cards, colored bags, ribbons, material and cloth, etc.
(Colors printed from the computer are NOT acceptable. Your sources must be found materials. DO NOT print color samples from the computer.)

STEP ONE: Use a ruler to carefully divide your journal page into 6 evenly divided areas. One way is shown at right. You may choose to divide your page horizontally, or divide it like a pie. No extra spaces should remain.

STEP TWO: Write the name of a color (red, yellow, blue, orange, violet or green) in one of the sections on your page.

STEP THREE: Lightly color each section the color that it is labeled.

STEP FOUR: Now, collect a lot of things to get color swatches from: magazines, newspapers, bits of wrapping paper, cards, colored bags, mail, pieces of ribbon, etc.....and begin cutting small swatches of color. Your shapes can be regular, or irregular. Make some interesting shapes. As you find examples, divide them into piles according to color.

STEP FIVE. When you have enough colors, begin to glue them into the correct spaces. In each color area, you should have a minimum of 10 different values, textures and paper finishes of each color. Each must be from a different source.

Your color swatches can be any size, so long as they are CUT (not torn) and they leave enough room for the other nine examples without going out of the lines. A little overlapping is fine, as long as you can see some of all ten examples at the end! This will take some planning. Pay attention to different values of the same color, and also the finish of the paper...try to find samples that are glossy, and samples that are mat finish. (Mat is the opposite of glossy!).Do not use staples or tape. Glue in your color samples. Remember that neatness and craftsmanship count!

STEP SIX: When you finish, 99% of the white space should be covered. Each color area should have a MINIMUM of 10 different samples that you have cut from different sources. Do not use staples or tape. Glue in your color samples. Remember that neatness and craftsmanship count!

XTRA CREDIT: If you would like to earn extra points, create two more areas on the next page and label them "black" and "white". Find samples of both! (20 points if done correctly) Remember that extra credit only counts AFTER the assignment is complete. Extra credit goes beyond what is required. It will not be counted if the other six colors are incomplete!

FUTURE ASSIGNMENT! Don't throw away your leftovers and scraps of colors! Put them in envelopes OR plastic bags, by color, and save them! You will be needing them in the next few weeks! We will also have a homwork assignment soon, where you will be asked to bring in your bags/envelopes. Also, as you go thru life, start picking up things that have interesting color, different types of papers, or different textured paper, save it so that you will have it for future journals!

Turn your page horizontally.
Divide your page neatly into 6 equal parts, with no space left over.
Label each section: red, yellow, blue, orange, violet, green
Lightly shade each section, using the proper color. This will help blend in with the collage areas.
