OBJECTIVE:
Students will be able to create and manipulate a multiple layer file (draw,
paint, text), and to create an illuminated letter that incorporates drawing
and painting techniques.
STEP ONE:
Open an AppleWorks Drawing file. Go to Format, Show Rulers. Use the Palette
Tools to create a painting environment that is 6”x6’. Center it
in the middle of the page, using the dotted guidelines.
STEP TWO: Next, create a 7x7” box in the drawing layer.
Use a 3 point black line. Move it behind the painting environment.
STEP THREE: Deselect, so that you are back in the Drawing
environment. Use the Text tool to drag a text box (the same size as the paint
environment will work). Type the one letter you intend to illuminate. Choose
an appropriate font, and set it at 255 points. Center the letter. Choose a
color!
STEP FOUR: Next, doubleclick on the painting environment
and begin a line drawing that will become your illustration. (Remember that
you need a solid black line border around the entire outside of this layer,
in order to trap colors. ) Complete the line drawing (no color yet!) and save
your work three times. File name: “YLNI letter1,2, and 3”.
STEP
FIVE: After you have saved the file several time, you can begin color
the areas. Begin by filling all the spaces with basic colors and gradient.
Next, go back and add the following:
* Texture-use transparent pattern
* Shading (use any tool available)
* Tint-find a place to do a tint!
* Detail! Be sure your drawing has good detail.
* Painterly effects: such as blend, darken, lighten, rake took, etc.
STEP SIX: Return to the Drawing layer and create your “border
by” creating shapes and duplicating it around the edge. (Example: If
you are doing a “western” scene, you might draw little cactus
and put it around the border. (Note: Your border can be done in the paint
environment, lassoed, and moved to the draw layer! Remember they must be moveable
to count as drawing!). Place an appropriate color behind the border.
EVALUATION:
*Remember, it’s about quality, no quick!
*Directions have been followed
*Successful completion
* Clear center of attention
* Illustration works well around letter
* Balanced
* Contains transparencies, tints, and transparent patterns
* Shows use of the Transform menu
* Shows use of the Brush Effects
* Shows use of the Paint Modes
* Has 3 separate layers: Text, Drawing (border) and Painting
* Creative!
