OBJECTIVES:
1) To use AppleWorks to create an illustration of a house, with foreground, middleground and background;

2) To create a house that reflects the Victorian style of architecture
3) to create, and be able to manipulate a multiple layer file (drawing, painting, text);
4) to incorporate a wide variety of painting techniques.

If you designed a haunted house, what would it look like?

It would most likely be a house that comes from the architectural style known as VICTORIAN, dating from the late 1800's.

Typically, "Queen Anne" style Victorian houses are the models for so called "haunted" houses, because they have many fanciful details, such as:
turrets
porches
stained glass windows
bannisters and spindles
balconies

"gingerbread" (decorative cutouts that gives the home a lacy look).

Play the role of an architect and design a unique haunted house, while using some of the traditional Victorian architectural elements!

STEP ONE: First, explore! Look at the websites listed (right) and find a MINIMUM of three "inspirational" houses, objects or things from these websites or a website of your choosing. Remember that your inspiration must be a PHOTOGRAPH, not a painting, cartoon, or any other artwork created by an artist.

When you locate a photo you want to use, simply put your mouse on it and drag the photo to your desktop so that you can refer to them later. Create a folder entitled "Resources" and place your reference photos inside. You may also bring in photos, so long as doing this does not delay your work (such as your own house). These photos will be your visual resources and will turned in along with your finished illustration!

STEP TWO: Begin your haunted house illustration by opening an AppleWorks Drawing file. File Name: YLNI house1.

Create the basic structure in the Drawing Environment, where it is much easier to manipulate and duplicate basic shapes. Use sufficient detail to give your house a sense of realism. Try to incorporate as many 3D effects as you can! Be sure to include doors, windows, stairs, porches, turrets, etc. Be sure to include background and foreground in your plan! Use details or features from a minimum of three resource photos. Note: NO COLOR should exist in this file. Line only! Save your work several times.

STEP THREE: Once you have completed your drawing, you will transfer it to a PAINTING ENVIRONMENT. Simply Select All and Copy your drawing. Next, open a new DRAWING (yes, drawing!) file and use the Palette Tool to drag a Painting Environment. Paste. When your drawing appears, move it and adjust it so that it will be placed where you need it to be on the page! Next, add a 3 point border (black). Save your file 3 times as YLNIhouse2 (3 & 4).

STEP FOUR: Now, complete the drawing by creating a background and foreground. Your building is in the middleground. Be sure all the lines connect to the border so that color leaks do not occur. SAVE YOUR WORK!

STEP FIVE: Begin to colorize your illustration by using Opaque paint to fill areas with basic colors and gradients. Be sure all areas have color before you begin adding texture and color detail.

STEP SIX: Please refer to the Grading Rubric for more info.
Next, add the following:
* Texture: use transparent pattern to add texture!
* Shading (use any tool available)
* Tint: Find a place to use transparencies..like ghosts or shadows!
* Detail! Be sure your drawing has good detail.
* Painterly effects: such as blend, darken, lighten,
rake took, spray can, etc.

STEP SEVEN: Finish your painting by adding details to the foreground and background that will make it rich! Don't forget about shadows!
