JOURNAL #1:
The Name Journal

Assignment Date: Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011
Due Date: Wed., Sept. 7, 2011
Bring your journal on Wednesday for a review! I will give you recommendations to raise the grade. Then bring it back Thursday for final evaluation on Critique Day!
Critique Day: Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011 This is the FINAL DAY to receive full credit for your journal. Also, your journal must be in class on this day in order to earn Critique Points!

Points: 100

ASSIGNMENT: Your first journal assignment is to create a two-page visual illustration about yourself. Your pages should illustrate who you are, what you are all about, and what is important to you.

Your page must contain the following elements to be eligible for full credit:

  1. Use two facing pages: Open your sketchbook to the first two pages (both pages should be seen at the same time, as shown at right). Your design should be created so it looks like one design, filling the two pages (in other words, the pages should go together, not look separate or different!). (NOTE: If you are reusing an old journal, please clip or bind the used pages in the front, and go to the back of the book, where the new pages are. I will expect that future assignments follow this first journal assignment, in order--NOT skip around in the book.)
  2. Text: Your name, written big and bold (first and last). Be sure it is easy to read. Think carefully about how you can design the letters.
  3. Drawing: Create drawings and designs on both pages around your name. Show me what you can do!
  4. Collage: Add some small pieces of collage to make your page more interesting. (If you don't know what collage is, check this website for help: http://www.artlex.com/) The collage portion of your journal should be no more than 50% of the overall page. (Example: Maybe you are on the football team: Use a magazine and some neat football photos (footballs, goalposts, etc.) and include them on your pages!)
  5. Media: Use a minimum of 3 different mediums, such as pencil, marker, ink, colored pencil, paint, glitter, etc.

    EVALUATION of this journal:
Grades will be based upon the following:

JOURNAL GRADING POLICY:

Remember that journals are always an overnight assignment---however, there is time built in beyond the due date for improvement! You may bring your journal to class on Aug. 31st, or on any day prior to the Critique Day, for advice. You will then have until the Critique Date to revise and improve---before receiving a final grade. Beyond the Critique Date, no further extension of time will be given.

Late Journals are not accepted. This includes being significantly late to class (and I will be the judge of what is significant!) This also includes not coming to class for any reasons other than an administration "summons". In the event you go to the health room, please bring your journal by on the way, or send it with a friend. No credit will be earned for late homework, although it would still count towards your portfolio grade if you did it anyway! And, it would show your dedication as a student! (Very important at the end of the quarter when you're one point from the next grade!)

Absences: If you were in school on the day the assignment was given, it is expected that you will have the journal ready on the day of your return.

STUDENTS WHO HAVE SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES: In order to receive points for your homework, it must be turned in PRIOR to leaving the building. In other words, if you are leaving to play soccer, football, etc., you are STILL expected to have homework in on time. The only exception is if you are never on campus that day. Please bring it by to me, or send it with a friend. The school assumes if you are a good enough student to miss class, you should be able to keep up and turn in assignments on time!

Loose Work: Journal assignments must be in your journal to earn credit. (An exception will be made for those students who have already brought me a note from Mom/Dad/Guardian, explaining when you will have your supplies.)

NOTE: Here are two examples of excellent Name pages. Please be aware that the example below contains more collage than you are allowed....the requirements were slightly different. They are here only to provide an example of the quality and involvement and effort that is expected.
