JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT  Assigned: Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009

Due date:
Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009.
Critique Date: Monday, Sept. 14, 2009 (Bring your Journal to Class on the Critique Date for a grade!)

Please be aware that journal assignments are always an overnight assignment...However, grades are given on the CRITIQUE date, in order to give you extra time to make them the best they can be!

You may bring your journal to class on Sept. 9, so that we can review your progress, during class. You may also bring it in any day prior to the Critique Date for advice. You will then have until the Critique Date to revise and improve---before it receives a final grade!

Your journal MUST be in class on the CRITIQUE day to receive credit!

Points: 100

ASSIGNMENT: Your first journal assignment is to create a two-page visual illustration about yourself. Your pages should illustrate who you are, what you are all about, and what is important to you.

Your page must contain the following elements to be eligible for full credit:

  1. Use two facing pages: Open your sketchbook to the first two pages (both pages should be seen at the same time, as shown at right). Your design should be created so it looks like one design, filling the two pages (in other words, the pages should go together, not look separate or different!).
  2. Text: Your name, written big and bold (first and last). Be sure it is easy to read!
  3. Drawing: Create drawings and designs on both pages around your name.
  4. Collage: Add some small pieces of collage to make your page more interesting. (If you don't know what collage is, check this website for help: http://www.artlex.com/) The collage portion of your journal should be no more than 50% of the overall page. (Example: Maybe you are on the football team: Use a magazine and some neat football photos (footballs, goalposts, etc.) and include them on your pages!)

EVALUATION:  Grades will be based upon evidence of planning, time, effort, and fulfilling the requirements above. Be sure to look at some of the examples from previous years to get an idea of what an "A" work looks like! (Note that some years, requirements varied! Be sure to read the four requirements above!)

JOURNAL GRADING POLICY:

Late Homework is not accepted. No credit will be received for late homework, although it would still advance your skills if you did it anyway. And, it would show your dedication as a student!

If you are absent, and you were in school on the day the assignment was given, then you must turn your journal on the day you return in order to receive credit.

Journal assignments are not accepted loose. (I'll make an exception for any student who brought me a note from home on the day of the Materials Check). Glued in, and taped in pages will be counted off one letter grade.

DUE DATE: Is the day the journal is due. This means that you will bring your journal to class, so that we can review your progress, during class. You will then have until the Critique Date to revise and improve---before I give it a final grade!

STUDENTS WHO HAVE SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES: In order to receive points for your homework, it must be turned in PRIOR to leaving the building. In other words, if you are leaving to play soccer, football, etc., you are STILL expected to have homework in on time. The only exception is if you are never on campus that day. Please bring it by to me, or send it with a friend. The school assumes if you are a good enough student to miss class, you should be able to keep up and turn in assignments on time!

NOTE: Here are two examples of excellent Name pages. Please be aware that the example below contains more collage than you are allowed....the requirements were slightly different. They are here only to provide an example of the quality and involvement and effort that is expected.
