GRADING POLICY (as prescribed by the Board of Education)

Overview: This is a studio art class that greatly depends upon participation, therefore attendance and punctuality are two of the most important aspects of this class. Students who are absent or tardy miss the opportunity to develop and practice skills that are at the heart of the curriculum. Make up work can never fully substitute for the classroom experience!

Your grade will be determined by the three factors below.
An explanation of each factor follows.

50% CLASSWORK (Participation)

What about ASSESSMENTS (30%)?
Students will demonstrate mastery of the skills, concepts and objectives
through a variety of assessment tools, including

CLASSROOM RULES & Procedures
It is important that we have a working understanding of how things operate in this room. Being mindful of the rules and procedures will help you keep the Classwork category of your grade as high as possible! (Likewise, failure to follow the rules and procedures will result in loss of Classwork points. "Forgetting" the rules is not a valid excuse. As young adults, it is your responsibility to be aware of the rules, and to remember to follow them.)

1. Enter the classroom wearing your ID properly. Students who have to be stopped at the door to find, put on, or uncover an ID will lose daily classwork points (daily work habits). Additionally, if you do not have an ID, you will not be permitted to log on to any computer. This will result in a zero for participation for the day.

2. Be in your assigned seat, ready to work, when the tardy bell rings.
.
3. Begin the warm-up immediately. Check for instructions for the warm up. They can usually be found in the online calendar, or projected on the board. In order to earn credit, warm ups must be accomplished within the first few minutes of class, before the lesson begins.
4. Do not talk. Hold all unnecessary talking until after class, or until the teacher indicates that talking is appropriate for the task. Particularly during the first FIVE MINUTES of class, while the teacher is taking roll and dealing with the business of starting class, NO one should be talking. Students may lose up to 10 points from participation if they are talking during this time.
5. Do not bring food, drink or liquids of any kind into the classroom. This includes cosmetics and lotions. Leave these items on the table provided by the door. Ten points will be deducted from the participation grade if drinks or food is found. "Forgetting" doesn't change this!
6. Handle the computers with care!!! Do not bump or jar the computer or touch the monitor screen with your fingers.). Also, be careful that you place the keyboard & mouse out of harms way when you are not using it.
7. Adhere to the Code of Conduct and The Roosevelt Way: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity & Kindness! In the real world, if you are polite and patient you have a much better chance of getting whatever you want. That works here, too!

8. Move carefully in the classroom! We have delicate equipment and many stools, cords, etc.
9. Personal electronic devices must be off and out of sight! (If you are asked to put away an electronic device, assume that points have been deducted from your classwork grade!). Depending upon the situation and the frequency of this problem, between 10 and 50 points may be deducted from the participation grade.
10. Back up your work weekly! Don't be caught short! Hard drives crash, and it is your responsibility to be sure all your work is protected!

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
Classroom procedures are just as important as rules!

PART I: ABSENCES & MAKE UP WORK:

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up the work. It is my responsibility to make sure the work is provided to you. Most often, this will occur via the class website, where assignments are kept on the daily calendar. Remember that according to the county policy, you have exactly as many days as you were out to make up the work.

This applies also to computer lab time, particularly if you've missed work on projects and assignments that need to be completed, or if we learned new skills. If make up time is not done, loss of Classwork points may happen! While computer lab time is technically expected to be made up within the time allowed by the policy, I am open to some flexibility. We will work together to find a time when you can come in. See me to schedule a time the day you return. (Note: In most cases, I would expect that 1/2 a period is enough time to make up the work or practice time missed. Consider coming in the second half of your lunch time, or just after school.)

TRUANCY: Students who have an unauthorized absence for a day, portion of a day, or individual class, is considered truant. Remember that the only person who can excuse you from this class is your teacher, your administrator or your guidance counselor. I expect that you will be in class every day, not making up tests, finishing work for other classes, etc. If you are not in class and do not have a documented, state approved reason, you can expect to lose all points for the day, and any assignments due that day. (Note: I am not usually unreasonable. If you are a student in good standing, and have a need to be somewhere else in the building, please check with me first! Chances are good that I will say "yes"!)

OTHER THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

1.Late work is not acceptable, and will not be graded. Turn in homework and classswork assignments on time.
2. BACK UP YOUR WORK!!! It is your responsibility to back up your work, either by writing CD’s or using a flash drive or using the H-drive!!. Hard drives fail! Don’t risk all your work by not following the required procedure to back up each week! Any ungraded work must be redone if work is lost due to not being backed up! (It happens to some unlucky person every year!!!)
2. WET STUFF: Leave wet umbrellas and coats over on the side of the classroom. Feel free to hang them on a chair...but NOT on the large tables.
3. CAREFUL OF ARTWORK! Be mindful of artwork laid out on the student tables! It takes time and money to print...and injury can occur from moving items or stacking things on top of artwork. Don’t do it! Be respectful of other peoples work and handle it with care! Check with your teacher for help.
4. Remember that it is the teacher’s job to answer the door. It’s a big room. If Ms. Cunningham doesn't’t hear the knock, please call her attention to it. Do NOT answer the door.
5.Do not borrow from my desk or anywhere in the room without asking. You MAY use items on the Student Work tables. And there is always tissue and paper towels for your convenience.
6. If you are illegally tardy, sign the tardy log. Write neatly, and place the date and time in the area provided. Failure to sign in will result in an unexcused absence!
7. DO NOT MOVE STOOLS unless you check with Ms. Cunningham first! It is dangerous and hazardous to the equipment. If you have a need, see me! (I don’t like the stools either, but we are stuck with them until sometime in the future. Make do!)
8. HALL PASSES: In general, I do not give out hall passes unless it is an emergency. Don’t plan to have too many (emergencies). Use your class change time for personal business. If you have a medical reason
that necessitates having to leave the room often, please see me. Passes will not be issued
to go to your locker or take care of personal business.
9. Do not use the back door to enter or leave the classroom at any time.
It is open strictly for ventilation and will be closed permanently if this becomes an issue.
10. If you bring balloons to class, secure them somewhere away from the computers, as you come in. Static electricity is the enemy of computers!
11. TLC...Let me know if you need TLC today....We all have those days!

PART II: Notes, Yellow Slips, ID’s, etc.

IF YOU ARE ABSENT, follow these steps:
1. Upon returning, put your yellow slip (or note, if your class is Period 1) in the blue tray on my desk. (Pick it up on your way out!)
2. Go online to the class website for information. Check the calendar to see the objectives for that day you missed, and what we did in class.2. Check the HANDOUTS webpage and the ARCHIVE DOCS if you've missed any handouts.
3. See me after school or during the second half of my planning period to get any information you may have missed. (Per 3)
4. Come to the Graphics Lab for make up time. Because this is a skills based class, you are expected to make up time and practice. This is how you recover the classwork points lost when you are absent.

Most days, the Graphics Lab is open after school for 45 minutes most days. Please let me know you are coming, so that I won't lock up and go home!

PERIOD 1: NOTES FOR ABSENCES should be presented first thing in the morning, as we are taking care of attendance. It is your responsibility to pick up new or signed yellow slips from the tray at the end of the period. Please realize that your note must be written with one of the state approved reasons for being absent. The most common of these are: personal illness, court order (attach paperwork) & death in the family. (Please read the county guidelines carefully for who is covered under death in the family). Any notes presented with reasons other than the State Approved reasons will result in an UNEXCUSED yellow slip. (Note: family emergency, personal problems, family business, babysitting, weddings, vacation, etc, are NOT state approved reasons.)

Need a Temporary ID?

It’s your responsibility to let me know you need an ID if I don’t catch it! Bring it to my attention after the Warm Up.
BUS SLIPS for late legal arrivals must have your name, and the stamped time and date. Place in the above tray.

PERIODS 2-7: Please place your yellow slip in the blue tray on my desk marked "NOTES". It is your responsibility to pick it up on the
way out of class.

PERIOD 8: Please place your yellow slip in the blue tray on my desk marked "notes". It will not be returned to you.

OTHER STUFF FOR ME TO SIGN:
Progress reports, sports reports, field trip forms, or any other kind of form I need to read and sign also go in the designated tray. It’s your job to pick them up at the end of class. Please be responsible for getting these forms to me on time. DO NOT interrupt other classes with these items.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT Sports, Field Trips, and other school approved activities:
Many times students are part of a planned school event, field trip, SGA event, Cheerleader activity or sports/team event. These are considered excused, however, if you have homework due that day YOU MUST TURN IT IN prior to leaving or participating in the event in order to receive credit. This means, if you have a baseball game during your afternoon class, your homework is still due that day! If you reported to the building for any reason you are responsible for handing in any work due that day! Follow the procedure above to see what you missed.

An example: You play tennis. You will be missing 7th period Computer Graphics due to a tennis match. There is a journal (homework) assignment due that day. You must turn in the journal (homework) assignment prior to leaving, in order to receive credit. You may bring it buy between classes, before school, or send it with a buddy (realizing that if the buddy doesn't follow thru, it will be your responsibility!) Late assignments are not accepted, so you will receive a failing grade if you turn it in the next school day.

HOMEWORK and Sketchbook/JOURNALS
Homework is DUE at the beginning of the period. Turn homework in to the designated tray as you enter the classroom, on your way to your seat. This tray will disappear shortly after the tardy bell rings.
Homework submitted after this time will not be graded. Homework left anywhere else, including my desk, will be not graded. Late homework will not be accepted. ( Note: A green pass does NOT guarantee that I will accept the late homework or journal assignment. I will use my own discretion as to whether this is an acceptable late arrival...or a ruse!)

About Journals:
Each week, you will receive a journal/sketchbook assignment. The due date is the following day, unless otherwise announced. Journal/sketchbook assignments are an OVERNIGHT assignment.
(I may however, choose to have you bring them in on another day so that we can look at them together. This is called a class critique.) Students are expected to have the journal finished and ready to evaluate the day after the assignment is given. Also, be aware that any day you are in school you must make arrangements for your journal to be turned in on time. Sports events, trips to the nurse, SGA activities and other school activities do not keep homework from being due! (If you are too ill to make it to class and must report to the nurses office, please ask the nurse to send her student aide to me with your homework.)

TESTING

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
ALL WORK TO BE GRADED is included in the Integrity Policy.
Violation of any part of the Integrity Policy will result in a zero on the assignment or test. Refer to your Integrity Policy for details. Students will be required to sign (or write) the Integrity Policy prior to any test.
This will include a statement that they did not "give or receive help in any form".

In this class, you are expected to do your own work.. Here is a partial list of some of the things that will be considered cheating: (1) Sharing of work, (2) doing work for someone else to turn in, (3) sharing and/or copying any information such as test answers, homework, classwork or warmups,
(4) turning in work, projects or papers that have previously been turned in to another class for grading or credit,
(5) using electronic devices (phones, computers, etc.) to get information during a test or graded activity (except where allowed), etc
.
These and other violations will result in a zero for both parties. It may also result in further disciplinary action.
Infractions will be reported to advisers of any team, organization, sport or honors organizations to which the student belongs or participates in.
And it’s OK to say NO. If someone asks to view your classwork or homework for the purpose of copying, just say no. Tell the other student you will not jeopardize your grade, or your academic integrity standing for anyone. Remember that a real friend would’t ask! See me privately if you have any problems with this issue!

TEN RULES FOR TEST TAKING:

During a test, quiz or exam the following rules will be in effect. Failure to follow the rules will result in a zero. There are no “second chances”!

1. Come to class prepared with BOTH pencil and pen. Many tests will be scantron, necessitating a pencil. It is your responsibility to come ready for the test. Scantrons taken in pen will not be scored, and a zero will result.
2. Do not talk, speak aloud, use sign language or communicate in any way.
3. Eyes must be kept strictly on your desk, your test and/or your computer screen. Looking at your neighbor or his/her work is considered a form of communication.
4. All materials except writing utensils must be put away during the test and not touched until the test is over. During a test or quiz, unless it it clearly written on the test, no notes, notebooks or any other written or digital
information may be used. Do not get into notebooks, bookbags, purses, cell phones, etc., during the test.
Computers must be logged off unless otherwise instructed.
5. Electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, etc.) may not be on or visible during the exam.
6. If you have a question, raise your hand and wait patiently for the teacher to come to you. Do not leave your seat or speak out.
7. When you are finished, raise your hand and wait patiently for your test to be collected. Remain seated and quiet until the test is over.Do not raise your hand unless it is an emergency. Do not ask for a pass.
8. Students are to remain seated for the entire period, or until Ms. Cunningham has verbally indicated that the test is over and that students are free to move around. STAY SEATED!
9. When the test is completed, you will know it is over because Ms. Cunningham will say:
“Everyone has completed the test and you are now free to move around and speak”.
