Color, Perception & Illusion!
We see colors every day. However, the way we see color is often influenced by the surrounding colors and shapes! Use the links at right to test your perceptual skills, and to check out some of the funny ways our eyes trick us! Many artists over the years have used these perceptual tricks to produce art works that are both fun and amazing.
Journal assignment: Create a journal page that reflects your reading and experimentation on the websites shown at right. For instance, you might use the "Colors With Borders" website as your inspiration and create a page in which all your color areas are bordered with black...or another color...to make them stand out! Or, you might try creating an optical illusion. Or, you might create a page that simply reflects your reading and understanding of color, perception and illusion. There's no wrong answer, so long as you use planning and thought to construct your page.

Look at the cute little boy (above right). He's shown in two different colors, right ? Now gaze at the left plus sign for 20 seconds, then look at the right plus sign. The image is looking normal now ! Ain't it incredible ? This phenomenon is called chromatic adaptation. Your eyes adjust themselves to the overload of colors. When you look at the right, your eyes are still filtering out the cyan and yellow. For a while.
"Whilst
part of what we perceive comes through our senses from the object before us, another part always comes out of our own mind."
