Listed below are some quick projects that you can accomplish in a couple of periods!

There are lots of examples on this page. Notice that most are "photography" based (which means they won't be drawing intensive and time consuming!) These projects depend upon the development of an artistic "eye", which you all have!

1. Positive/Negative Shape Project: Use black and white (or two complementary colors) to create a sophisticated design that revolves around your Concentration them!

2. Positive/Negative with emphasis color: Same as above, except that one area of emphasis exists! Check out the example of Shea Brown's pos/neg design at right...he later added one small area of black, around one of the forms, for an area of emphasis. It really made it pop, and look "complete".

3. Text and B&W: Create a black and white design in Illustrator that makes use of Text Tools in an interesting way! Example at right.

4. TEXT pictures: Using Illustrator, draw with the pencil. Then, put the Text tool on the line and create the lines in your illustration with words! Check out Soseena Woods "Portrait With Glasses".

5. PHOTO REMAKE: Find a photo that you took yourself (NO INTERNET!). Use POSTERIZATION, filters or curves to "reinterpret the photo". Collage together other photos. Use a color scheme (i.e., complementary, or grayscale, etc.) to create a new photo. See Chieun's japanese photo as an example! (right)

6. Create a self portrait that is unusual and graphically compelling. (See Tayo's example below.)

This photo is by Chieun Ahn (from her trip to Japen with ERHS)
She added the white circle in the background, reflecting the Japanese flag.

.
Soseena Wood's "Type Portrait" (this took much longer
than two periods).... It's a good example of using type
to create a form!

Shea Brown, Pos/Neg...He ultimately added a red area
of emphasis on this design, which really made it pop!

Pos/Neg + text (Started in Illlustrator...finished in Photoshop)

Silhouettes...they make a great starting point!
These were created from the photos taken in
class for the Lichtenstein project! Can you
think of a creative way to "finish" this type of
composition and make it zing?

Tayo's Self Portrait

Diana Cortez: Text project...using scanned
newpaper text.

MORE POSITIVE/NEGATIVE EXAMPLES!

Dillon Powell, from a photo he took of our football team.

Jane Ibeh's Pos/Neg design...Jane's AP concentration
had to do with African designs. Simple and
effective!

Start with newsprint or a book! Add & edit! Recreate!
