Lincoln photo after Posterizing (4)

LINCOLN COLORIZED USING POSTERIZE COMMAND.

THE TILING EXERCISE
Objective: 1)To learn to posterize an image, and 2) to create
a tiled image of Abraham Lincoln, using a Pop-Art Style.

SET UP DIRECTIONS:

  1. Go to the LIncoln website (right) and find a portrait that you like. Drag it to the desktop, and open it in Photoshop. You may choose to use TWO photos and alternate them, if you wish.
  2. Open your Lincoln photo in Photoshop. (File: Open). Once open, you must SAVE it as a .jpg file, in RGB mode, so that you can use color. To be sure it is in RGB mode, go to IMAGE>MODE. Change if necessary!
  3. Go to IMAGE>Adjustments>IMAGE SIZE. Find the DOCUMENT SIZE, and change the WIDTH to 4 inches. Do not change anything else. (Note the height, so you will know later!)
  4. Save as "YLNIlincoln".
  5. NOW is a good time to check out the OBAMA poster to see what type of image we are going for! See link right.

STEP ONE: Create a new background file in Photoshop using the following setup:

File New: Size: 8x18" (or, make your background big enough for THREE of your photos, stacked vertically. If your photo is 4 inches high, make your file 8x12")
Resolution: 72 dpi
Mode: RGB
Background: White
Save your file as "YLNItiling". (This is your background file).

STEP TWO: Copy and paste your Lincoln photo onto the background. Duplicate this layer six times (two across, 3 down).
Drag into place as shown.

STEP THREE: Begin by selecting a photo to work with. (Be sure you are selected on the correct layer!) Zoom in.
Go to IMAGE>Adjustments>POSTERIZE.
Put a number in the box between 2 and 5. Watch, as the value areas are defined!
(see photo at right)

STEP FOUR: Now start to colorize!
First, select the MAGIC WAND tool.
Now, go to the TOP of the screen and UNCHECK the CONTIGUOUS button. Now, your magic wand will select ALL of the tone you click on, anywhere it is found in the photo.

STEP FIVE: Select a value area in the photo, and it will be selected EVERYWHERE in the photo. Now, add color by using the FILL command (Edit>Fill), or dragging a gradient across it. You can also zap it with variations. Apply color to the entire photo.

STEP FIVE: Continue modifying colors by using CURVES and HUE & SATURATION. Both of these controls can be found in IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS.

Continue until you have remade each photo. Try not to "lose" the photo in the filters. It should still be recognizable!

STEP SIX: ADD TEXT somewhere in each tile. Use the type tool, and the Warp Text tool.

STEP SEVEN: Save your file as "YLNItiling". Make a screenshot and put it into your powerpoint portfolio.
