Step One: The first thing you need to do is make sure that the construction paper you are using is the same size as the journal you are using. Measure your journal page, and then cut the piece of construction paper to match. Next, fold the piece of construction paper in half, lengthwise.

Step Two: Using a pencil, write your name in cursive along the fold. Be sure each letter touches the fold.

Step Three: Next, take a pen or colored pencil and trace around the signature, outlining it on all sides. Be sure to outline the areas under the signature.

Step Four: Cut out along the outline, both above and below the signature. Cut away any areas inside of loops (like O's and R's), as well as small spaces on the fold between letters. BE SURE you leave some of each letter together along the fold.

Step Five: Unfold your wordbug! After you unfold it, lay it down on a page in your journal (neatly centered) and carefully trace around it. Neatness counts!

Step Six: Begin by outlining the wordbug design with marker. Think about whether the wordbug will be lighter or darker than the background. You may want to color it in with a color, or black. You may choose to leave it white, or filled with a light color, such as yellow or gold (gold or silver markers work great here!)

Step Seven: Now comes the artistic part! To complete your wordbug, completely colorize your page. Add color, designs, textures, patterns and other images to the areas behind the design. Be creative! Let it get wild! Make it a party on paper!!
