First Quarter Portfolio

Due Date: Wed., Sept. 23, 2009

Make up Date (if you are absent on Wed.): Thurs., Sept. 24, 2009

We are embarking on a new type of portfolio experience this nine weeks!

Your portfolio is going to be uploaded to an online Ning, dedicated to this class.
This will help you "practice" for uploading to the AP College Board site, when the time comes!
At this point, the College Board has not opened it's website to students. When they do, we will
be using it. Until then, this ning will serve as our place to share work, thoughts and struggles.

The First Four Weeks!

Last Friday marked the end of our fourth weeks! You should now have four weeks of work to show for your time. Some projects will necessarily be "works in progress".

To create your online portfolio (slideshow), you will upload the following items to the class ning. Please arrange in this order for maximum credit. Be sure that each item is properly cropped (no additional white space). You may do this at home or at school, provided you have all your work backed up on your flash drive (which you should!).

Once they are uploaded, find the MY ALBUMS link, and create a new album. THIS IS YOUR SLIDESHOW!
Name it "THE FIRST FOUR WEEKS".

  1. Album Cover: Optional slide! Create an Album Cover (which is like a Title Slide) in Photoshop. Size: 4x6 inches, 150 dpi. This will serveas the first "slide" in your slideshow. This slide must contain your name, and may be individual to your personal tastes! Creative is OK, but don't spend any time on it. No grade will be given in termsof a project. Just in terms of having a "title" slide!
  2. Double Take- The original photo
  3. Double Take- Your edited Version (might show only the edited photo, OR the two photos side by side.
  4. Double Take- Your edited version with red circles showing changes.
  5. The original line drawing of your mandala (the two piece section that you scanned).. It should be cleaned up, cropped close to eliminate unnecessary white space, and saved as a jpg file format.. Simply open the file, and go to SAVE AS. (I would give it a new name, just to be sure you don't accidentally overwrite the original. It happens ever year, to someone! Be safe!!) Choose the "jpg" file format (no layers). After it's saved, check to see if it is under 10 MB.
  6. The complete line mandala, properly aligned and fitted. Follow the same directions as above. NO extra white space please.
  7. The completed colorized mandala.
  8. The Impressonist Project (a work in progress is acceptable, although by this time, considerable progress would be expected.)
  9. One journal (properly edited so that they are high contrast (black and white) and free of any discoloration from the paper. Please crop close!)
  10. Rumors-Optional slide. If you have anything prepared for this item, add it to the end of the album. It will be one of the first items assigned for the upcoming week!

To set up work for uploading to the Ning,
following the following procedure:

Step One: Create a NEW FOLDER (File: New Folder) on the Desktop and name it "Ning jpgs").

Step Two: Open a file from the list above.

Step Three: Go to SAVE AS and give your file a NEW name. Next, choose the jpg file format (bottom of the save dialog box). When the jpg dialog box appears, set it on MAXIMUM. SAVE to your "Ning jpg's" folder.

HINT! Be sure to choose another name for your file!!!...Don't make this mistake! If you accidentally lose your layers on a project, it's Done! Totally worthless without layers! ).

Step Four: Reopen your file and check to see if you need to crop out the extra white space. To do this, select the CROP tool, in the Photoshop tool box, and drag around the image. Then double click to crop.

Step Five: After you've saved again, check each file to be sure that it is less than 10MB. You can easily do this by selecting the file on the desktop (click once on it) and go to FILE: GET INFO. Look for the file size. If it is MORE than 10 mb, open your file and reduce it's size. (Image: Image Size: Document Size). Save again and recheck! (Note: You can also check in the jpg dialog box, as you are saving).

Step Six: Log into the class Ning.

Step Seven: Go to the MY PHOTOS section. Find the + sign, and begin uploading your files. Don't worry about the order right now. You can adjust it later.

Step Eight: Find the link to MY ALBUMS. Create a new album, by clicking the "Add An Album" link. Name your album "The First Four Weeks".

Step Nine: Drag your album cover into the box provided.

Step Ten: Drag all other slides/uploaded items into the album. Rearrange in the proper order (above).
Note that there are EIGHT required slides, and two OPTIONAL slides.

Spend time where you will get the most points!
